Hi-De-Ho 1937 Film 1937 A Vitaphone film short available on the video collection Swing, Swing, Swing, vol. 2. This is an excellent short in which Cab worries his mother because he is unemployed and spends all of his time conducting songs on the radio. A passing deacon (a truly remarkable-looking individual) passes by while Cab is singing, "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues." The deacon takes Cab to his Gypsy fortune-telling wife, and Cab learns of his (mostly) rosy future. Other songs performed in this short are HI-De-Ho Miracle Man, Frisco Flo, and an instrumental of uncertain affinity to which Cab does some remarkable scatting and dancing.

11) In the movie Blues Brothers
(Gaskill-Mills-Calloway) Cab's famous signature tune! The lyrics are based on those of the folk song, Willie the Weeper, and the melody was modeled on St. James Infirmary and Prohibition Blues. It is a call-and-response song which has more verses than Cab ever sings. Cab insisted that Minnie was not a real person. See pages 111-113 in Cab's autobiography.
2) In our opinion, the best version! Cab appearis rotoscoped as the ghost of a walrus while performing; his band members are other ghosts.
3) This version remained unreleased for many years because Cab wailed in the style of a Jewish cantor, which offended some people at the recording studio. Cab almost certainly did it because he liked the sound, and not in an effort to mock people.
3b) This CD includes two takes done on the same date.
8-9) Recording includes just a few bars of the song.

2) This film short was a "soundie," intended to go into a juke box of sorts that had pictures as well as sound. It gives us excellent shots of the band members, and features a Shad Collins solo.

1942 Song and film short of the same name, available in:
1) Cab Calloway and his Orchestra
2) Black Artists of the Silver Screen, Music and Comedy masters, vol. 5
This film short was a "soundie," intended to go into a juke box of sorts that had pictures as well as sound. This is really fun footage! Cab Calloway, Tyree Glenn and the Palmer Brothers perform the vocals. Cab makes some really remarkable faces. Tyree makes little comments that are just a bit off the mark. Shad Collins performs a solo.
1) A good copy except that the beginning is clipped off.
2) A complete version, but the sound is distorted.

5) Two versions, one in Minnie the Moocher, the other in an undated film short.
(Primerose, arranger) This song originated as a folk song. Cab's early recordings of this song are beautiful and his late ones are terrible! It was his signature tune until he replaced it with Minnie the Moocher. Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong also recorded St. James Infirmary.
5) Really pathetic versions of this fine song.
St. James Infirmary Film 1947 A film short of the song, available on the video Cab Calloway and his Orchestra. This is the only piece in which Cab Calloway abandons his dignity. It is awful.

2) Cab Calloway and his Orchestra: "The Radio Years" 1940-45; Jazz Unlimited, 2027
(Handy)
1) This is gorgeous version of St. Louis Blues, in which Cab soars vocally, holding one note forever and then proceding to the next one without drawing a breath! Both the lyrics and melody are changed radically from the usual arrangement. The most famous renditions of this song are by Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong.
2) This is a swing version, not nearly as good as the 1930 recording.
Stack O' Lee Blues Song 11/18/31 Cab Calloway and his Orchestra 1931-1932; Classics 526 (Lopez-Dotwell) Originally from a folk song called Stacker Lee.
