This encyclopedia includes a long list of
search engines, the webrings of which we are members, and other sites that
we have found interesting, informative, amusing or attractive.
AmeraServe:
Search by keyword or category. Limited, so far.
America
Announce Archive: a search engine that allows you to search categories
for a site or topic, as well as a general search engine that simultaneously
searches other engines. Part of Matilda.
Anzwers:A
search engine for Australian and New Zealand sites, but also searches for
worldwide sites.
Searchterms:
A fascinating and somewhat appalling look at the top 100 words and phrases
searched for on the web.
Webrings
Webring:
This is one of the most fun and interesting sites on the web. If you have
a website and want to promote it, join a webring, set up courtesy of this
organization. If you want to start a webring of your own, they help you
set it up, free. If you simply want to find a large collection of linked
websites addressing a subject, check out the Webring directory!
Akhenaten:
This is a beautiful and well-written site dealing with Akhenaten and other
members of the Amarna family, complete with photographs of Amarna artwork.
Akhet-Aten
Home Page: Excellent photographs and good summary of information
about the people of Amarna.
Amiga
Pictures: Some very good computer art by Matthew Saul.
Babynamer:
A sit e with a searchable database of baby names.
Babynames:
A site with a searchable database and a monitored forum.
Betty
Boop: A nice, concise history of Betty Boop, with good pictures.
Clear Ink's
SpellWeb: Perhaps this isn't acutally a game, but it certainly
is fun to play with. Enter two words or phrases, and the program searches
your choice of two search engines for the frequency of occurrence of the
two and declares as the winner the most frequently encountered. We found
this useful in comparing the different spellings of Pharaoh Akhenaten's
name.
Dismuke's
Virtual Talking Machine: This is a site where you can hear actual
recordings from the early part of this century in streaming real audio.
Escape
Artist: An enormous amount of geographical information, designed
for people who are interested in possibly moving to a particular country
or region, complete with a prodigious number of links to other sites.
Farts.com:
Yes, it actually exists: a website devoted to flatulence, covering every
aspect of the subject imaginable. It includes sound effects, jokes and
stories, diet tips, and even a market of fart products.
General
Chemistry OnLine! This is a superb site for anyone taking a college-level
chemistry course who needs a little extra help or practice. The site offers
lecture notes, quizzes, tutorials and much more. As a scientist, I approve
of the way the lecture notes clearly distinguish between observations and
hypotheses, and emphasize where our ideas come from. Quizzes provide the
student not only with practice but instant feedback. We need more sites
like this!
Jazz Roots:
Tom Morgan's great website with lots of information about classical jazz
artists.
Kamus
Indonesia-Inggris: An online Indonesian-English and English-Indonesian
dictionary. You enter a word and the program searches a database and provides
linguistic information (like part of speech).
Mineralogy
Database: This isn't just a database, this is a whole library of
information about minerals in general and specific minerals. No geologist,
rock hound or gemologist should be without this reference!
Mr.
Showbiz Movie Guide: An extensive site that ranks movies and provides
reviews, movie summaries, photos and general movie news.
Protist
Images: A large collection of photographs of protists. Very useful!
RACHEL's
Environment & Health Weekly: This is an astoundingly thorough
collection of articles on environmental concerns, and should be required
reading for anyone living on the planet.
